Crafting a Custom Olive Wood & Green Epoxy Charcuterie Board for a Client
There’s something incredibly satisfying about turning a stunning piece of wood into a functional piece of art. My recent project—a custom olive wood charcuterie board with green epoxy accents—was a perfect blend of natural beauty and craftsmanship. What made this board even more special was the pair of hand-cut handles carved directly into the wood itself.
Selecting the Olive Wood
Olive wood has a character unlike any other: rich, warm tones, striking grain lines, and natural durability. The slab chosen for this board had beautiful live edges and dramatic streaking that inspired the entire design. With its natural curves and patterns, it was the perfect canvas for an epoxy accent.
Creating the Green Epoxy Accent
To bring contrast and depth, I poured a deep green epoxy into the natural voids and contours of the board. The goal was to enhance the wood’s natural shape rather than overwhelm it. Once mixed and poured, the epoxy cured into a glossy, vibrant ribbon that pairs beautifully with the warm tones of the olive wood.
Hand-Cutting the Handles
Instead of attaching external hardware, this board features cut-out handles carved directly into each end. These handles not only make the board easy to carry, but also maintain a clean, seamless look. After carefully marking the placement, I cut and shaped each handle, rounding and smoothing every edge to ensure comfort and a handcrafted finish.
Sanding & Finishing
With the epoxy cured and the handles shaped, the entire board went through a detailed sanding process—from coarse grit to a silky fine polish. This step brought the epoxy to a glass-like shine and highlighted every swirl and wave in the olive wood grain.
To protect the board, I applied a food-safe oil and wax blend. This nourishes the wood, enhances the colors, and gives the board a durable, subtle sheen.
The Final Result
The finished charcuterie board is a true one-of-a-kind piece. The warm olive wood, bold green epoxy, and clean cut-out handles come together in a design that feels both rustic and modern. It’s a functional serving board, but also a display-worthy centerpiece that reflects the beauty of handcrafted work.
